Magee Street Bakery is a huge hit amongst Northamptonians, having developed a sort of cult status since opening back in 2014. Here at Market New Media we’re no exception. In fact, we’re big fans. You’ll often find our founder, Ben, here enjoying a dirty chai latte and a sausage roll – his go-to order.
The bakery sits on the corner of two residential streets in the centre of Northampton. Set amongst rows of Victorian terraced homes, the bakery is frequented both by locals who can visit on foot and customers who travel in from further out in the county – sometimes just to pick up a loaf of bread!
Star of the show at Magee Street is the sourdough, which sells out every day. Baked on site in the kitchen behind the dining area, this is their specialty. Owners Carl and Jooles use an aged starter to give the bread the unique and distinctive flavour that makes it so popular amongst their customers.
Jooles and Carl are in at 5.30am every day to prepare the baked goods for that day. Think sausage rolls, croissants, cakes, brownies, sweet and savoury pastries, and the second Magee specialty, the Scotch egg, which changes every week. The bakery also offers breakfast sandwiches alongside weekly specials which are carefully considered and created by Carl. Without fail, there is always a vegan and vegetarian option on the specials board.
Of course it’s not just food, Magee serves coffee made with beans from local roasters Carrara plus a range of loose leaf teas from Brew Tea Co., all available for takeaway or to be enjoyed in their small, but perfectly formed, dining area.
“Magee Street has become so popular partly because people feel comfortable here and partly because what we serve is such good quality” said owner Jooles. “We make all of our customers feel welcome here and know so many of them by name.”
“Everything is fresh – we’re not opening packets – which is really important. You can see what you’re having being prepared in the kitchen before you eat it.”
